View Full Version : What causes summer fog along west coast?

The prog charts show IFR weather along the entire west coastline. I
understand how advection fog forms in the winter. But what is causing this
persistent fog this time of year? Upslope fog?

It's not fog as much as it is a low stratus deck. I'm no meteorologist, but
the reason I've heard for 40+ years is the juxtaposition of warm inland
temps and still pretty cold sea temps (north current). It usually lasts
until mid June, but is hanging around this year.

Here in San Francisco, it 'lives' off our coast during the summer - should
make for more opportunities for getting some more IMC hours in the last part
of my instrument training.

Right. I was speaking of SoCal where it usually leaves by mid-June.

You're lucky! Though I wouldn't be a 'good' Northern Californian if I
didn't include the jibe that your fog is then replaced by the L.A. smog
<GRIN>...... just kidding! ;-)

It lives off the coast of Oregon, too, coming in only on the occasion that a
VFR pilot is trying to land along the coast.
